{"id":105877,"date":"2018-10-09T14:43:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T18:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=105877"},"modified":"2018-10-09T14:43:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-09T18:43:10","slug":"ex-fbi-top-lawyer-rosenstein-wasnt-joking-about-recording-removing-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=105877","title":{"rendered":"Ex-FBI Top Lawyer: Rosenstein Wasn&#8217;t Joking About Recording, Removing Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/rosen_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105883\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/rosen_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/rosen_1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/rosen_1-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->ZeroHedge.com<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wasn&#8217;t joking when he told former FBI officials Andrew McCabe and Lisa Page that he wanted to secretly record President Trump and use the tapes to remove him from office, according to the FBI&#8217;s former top lawyer.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fox News<\/em>\u00a0reports that James Baker, who served as the FBI&#8217;s General Counsel before he was reassigned and then quit, told congressional investigators during a closed-door deposition last week that Page and McCabe relayed the same account of Rosenstein&#8217;s remarks &#8211; and that he was absolutely serious at the time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As far as Baker was concerned, this was a real plan being discussed,&#8221; reports\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/hilltv\/what-americas-thinking\/410447-former-fbi-lawyer-plot-to-record-remove-trump-not-a-joke\"><em>The Hill<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s John Solomon, citing a confidential source.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was no laughing matter for the FBI,&#8221; the source added.<\/p>\n<p>Solomon points out that Rosenstein&#8217;s comments happened right around the time former FBI Director James Comey was fired.<\/p>\n<p>McCabe, Baker&#8217;s boss, was fired after the DOJ discovered that he had leaked self-serving information to the press and then lied to investigators about it.\u00a0Baker, meanwhile, was central to the surveillance apparatus within the FBI during the counterintelligence operation on then-candidate Trump.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As the former FBI general counsel,\u00a0<strong>Baker was a senior figure with a pivotal position who had the ear of the FBI director.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Baker also is\u00a0<strong>at the heart of surveillance abuse accusations<\/strong>, many from congressional Republicans. His deposition lays the groundwork for a planned closed-door House GOP interview with Rosenstein later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Baker, formerly the FBI&#8217;s top lawyer, helped secure the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, as well as three subsequent renewals. &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fbi-lawyers-testimony-at-odds-with-rosenstein-denial-on-wire-report\">Fox News<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0also notes that McCabe&#8217;s own memos attest to Rosenstein&#8217;s intentions to record Trump &#8211; which led to Rosenstein reportedly tendering a verbal resignation to White House chief of staff John Kelly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosenstein is set to be interviewed in private on Thursday by the House Judiciary Committee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On September 21 the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/21\/us\/politics\/rod-rosenstein-wear-wire-25th-amendment.html\">New York Times<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>reported on Rosenstein&#8217;s alleged comments. The\u00a0MSM &#8211; citing anonymous officials &#8211; immediately\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/rosenstein-joked-about-secretly-recording-trump-say-sources-n911981\">spread the narrative<\/a>\u00a0that he was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/mattvespa\/2018\/09\/21\/oh-so-deputy-ag-rosenstein-was-joking-about-wearing-a-wire-to-ensnare-trump-n2521362\">simply joking<\/a>. Rosenstein&#8217;s office has tried to downplay the comments as a joke, insisting that he never gave an order to record Trump, and that he doesn&#8217;t believe Trump should be removed from office.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see if Rosenstein tells Congressional investigators the same thing on Thursday, under oath, under penalty of felony.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Baker\u2019s account to lawmakers this month clearly complicates an already complicated picture for Rosenstein before Congress, assuming he shows up for Thursday\u2019s interview.<\/p>\n<p>But even more so,\u00a0<strong>Baker\u2019s story lays bare an extraordinary conversation in which at least some senior FBI officials thought it within their purview to try to capture the president on tape and then go to the president\u2019s own Cabinet secretaries<\/strong>, hoping to persuade the senior leaders of the administration to remove the president from power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even more extraordinary is the timing of such discussions: They occurred, according to Baker\u2019s account, in the window around FBI Director James Comey\u2019s firing<\/strong>. Could it be that the leaders of a wounded, stunned FBI were seeking retribution for their boss\u2019 firing with a secret recording operation? &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/hilltv\/what-americas-thinking\/410447-former-fbi-lawyer-plot-to-record-remove-trump-not-a-joke\">The Hill<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Solomon points out that &#8220;<strong>This wasn\u2019t a president who was incapacitated at the time. He was fully exercising his powers \u2014 but in a way the FBI leadership did not like<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Keep in mind,\u00a0<strong>this is the same FBI that, a few months earlier during the 2016 election, had its top counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok talking to Page \u2014 his lover and the top lawyer to McCabe \u2014 about using their official powers\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/fbi-agent-peter-strzok-fired-over-anti-trump-texts\/2018\/08\/13\/be98f84c-8e8b-11e8-b769-e3fff17f0689_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.d7d28c0c0303\">to \u201cstop\u201d Trump<\/a>\u00a0in the election and having an \u201cinsurance policy\u201d against the GOP nominee<\/strong>. That insurance policy increasingly looks like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/TheSteelDossierTrumpIntelligenceAllegations\/The%20Steele%20Dossier%20-%20Trump-Intelligence-Allegations_djvu.txt\">an unverified dossier<\/a>\u00a0created by British intelligence operative Christopher Steele \u2014 a Trump hater himself \u2014 that was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/24\/us\/politics\/clinton-dnc-russia-dossier.html\">bought and paid for<\/a>\u00a0by the Democratic Party and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/hillary-clinton\" data-nid=\"188224\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>\u2019s campaign through their mutual law firm.\u00a0&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/hilltv\/what-americas-thinking\/410447-former-fbi-lawyer-plot-to-record-remove-trump-not-a-joke\">The Hill<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s also recall that this is the same FBI which employed Stephan Halper &#8211; a Cambridge professor and longtime US spook &#8211; to infiltrate and perform espionage on the Trump campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You walk away from the Baker interview with little doubt that the FBI leadership in that 2016-17 time-frame saw itself as far more than a neutral investigative agency but actually as\u00a0<strong>a force to stop Trump\u2019s election before it happened and then maybe reversing it after the election was over<\/strong>,&#8221; said Solomon&#8217;s source &#8220;directly familiar with the congressional investigation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baker&#8217;s other admissions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Solomon also reports that Baker told congressional investigators that a DNC attorney gave him information in the Russia investigation, and that he received a version of the infamous Steele Dossier from liberal journalist David Corn of Mother Jones magazine &#8211; which he then forwarded to Strzok&#8217;s team. Corn says this happened in November 2016, just after the election.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That transaction is significant for two reasons. First, at the time Steele had just been fired from the FBI probe for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2018\/aug\/4\/ex-spy-christopher-steele-trusted-fbi-despite-misc\/\">leaking to the media<\/a>\u00a0and he wasn\u2019t supposed to be further assisting the probe.
