{"id":105695,"date":"2018-10-07T07:21:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-07T11:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=105695"},"modified":"2018-10-07T07:21:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-07T11:21:50","slug":"mama-bears-come-out-of-hibernation-for-election-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=105695","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Mama bears&#8221; come out of hibernation for Election Day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Dems face backlash from \u2018mama bears\u2019 angered by Kavanaugh hearings<\/h1>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-07-at-7.18.07-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105696\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-07-at-7.18.07-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"628\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-07-at-7.18.07-AM.png 628w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-07-at-7.18.07-AM-300x223.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>New York Post<\/p>\n<p>In Huntsville, Ala., mom Vickie Freeman had wept for joy as she watched Brett Kavanaugh\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/09\/27\/kavanaugh-and-accuser-ford-testify-before-senate-panel\/\">testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And now that he\u2019s been confirmed as the country\u2019s 114th Supreme Court justice, she has a name for herself and other Republican moms galvanized by the tense and partisan confirmation process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the \u2018Mama Bears,\u2019 absolutely,\u201d Freeman told The Post. \u201cAnd it has really fired us up to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bruising Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/10\/06\/over-100-people-arrested-during-kavanaugh-protests-on-capitol-hill\/\">fueled feminist fury and Democrat disgust<\/a>\u00a0across the country \u2014 but the hearings also gave the GOP, and Republican mothers in particular, a sense of righteous anger that could turn midterm congressional races red.<\/p>\n<p>Especially in heartland red states, Republicans who are mad about the way Kavanaugh was treated could make the difference for the GOP as it tries to keep control of the House and Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing turns Republicans of all stripes \u2014 whether they\u2019re Bush Republicans or Trump Republicans \u2014 on like a court fight,\u201d Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Fox News on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrats \u201cplayed right into our hands, in retrospect,\u201d he crowed. \u201cMaybe I ought to say thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An NPR-Marist poll last week found that the Democrats\u2019 \u201centhusiasm gap\u201d has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/10\/02\/dems-blue-wave-looks-more-like-a-ripple-as-races-tighten-poll\/\">all but evaporated<\/a> in the heat of the confirmation battle.<\/p>\n<p>Republican enthusiasm has surged by 12 percentage points since July, the survey found, leaving the two parties statistically tied.<\/p>\n<p>GOP turnout could hinge in large part on a contingent that could be called the \u201cMama Bears\u201d \u2014 women who defend Kavanaugh and fear their sons could fall victim to unfounded allegations in the #MeToo age.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh have riled women nationwide \u2014 but their anger, it turns out, goes both ways.<\/p>\n<p>A poll taken after the nation heard Christine Blasey Ford\u2019s testimony against Kavanaugh, followed by his impassioned denial, found 55 percent of women opposed his elevation to the Supreme Court, but 37 percent were in favor.<\/p>\n<p>On Staten Island, the Kavanaugh hearings outraged Angie Moore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe minute a conservative gets accused, it\u2019s like due process goes out the window,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In Missouri, where Democrat Claire McCaskill is running for re-election, 47 percent of female voters have told pollsters her opposition to Kavanaugh has turned them against her, while 42 percent approve of her \u201cno\u201d vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are watching someone be declared guilty without proof,\u201d Kelly Melang of Beech Mountain, NC, told her two teen boys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try our best to raise them to be respectful and honorable,\u201d she added. \u201cBut we\u2019ve had to sit them down and tell them, you have to watch your back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fear for my sons,\u201d said Gayle Chasen of Staten Island. \u201cI believe in women\u2019s rights, but I also believe in the deviousness of girls. Anybody can come up with something from the past and just make up any kind of story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some moms took to social media to declare they\u2019d bought calendars for their sons to record their daily activities, just in case they have to one day defend themselves as Kavanaugh did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so terrifying,\u201d Freeman said of her 15-year-old son. \u201cI\u2019m not giving him a calendar. I\u2019m just thinking about not letting him go anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freeman, who calls herself a Christian conservative, said the controversy has sharply boosted voter enthusiasm in her community before Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were not Trump supporters initially, but we voted for him because of the Supreme Court,\u201d she said. \u201cSo we have to make sure our voices are heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chasen, a Democrat \u201cstill on the fence\u201d about the coming elections, is livid about the tactics her party used in its effort to take Kavanaugh down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat an embarrassment,\u201d she said, citing the sex scandals of Democrats such as Bill Clinton and Eliot Spitzer. \u201cHow dare they badger this guy?\u201d she asked. \u201cThey\u2019re all dirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No matter how the Kavanaugh confirmation may affect the midterms one month away, its shock waves could continue rumbling for years.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Collins (R-Maine), who cast a \u201cyes\u201d vote that helped save Kavanaugh \u2014 and the Trump administration \u2014 from a humiliating defeat on the Senate floor, may have already drawn a high-profile challenger for her seat when she runs for re-election in 2020.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-related alignright\">\n<div id=\"more-on\" class=\"module--see-also box module inline related desktop\">\n<div class=\"module-title inline\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"module-wrapper \">\n<article class=\"story-photo-box oversize-headline\">\n<div class=\"headline-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"headline-container\">\n<h3 class=\"postid-13039121 headline\"><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Susan Rice, former national security adviser to President Barack Obama and US ambassador to the United Nations, toyed with throwing her hat in the ring in a pair of Friday tweets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wants to run for Senate in Maine?\u201d tweeted Jen Psaki, Obama\u2019s former communications director, shortly after Collins wrapped up her 40-minute speech explaining her \u201cyes\u201d vote for Kavanaugh. \u201cThere will be an army of supporters with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe,\u201d Rice responded 11 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>But shortly after, Rice backtracked on her declaration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany thanks for the encouragement,\u201d she tweeted. \u201cI\u2019m not making any announcements. Like so many Americans, I am deeply disappointed in Senator Collins\u2019 vote for Kavanaugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rice would enter the fray as a novice candidate, but one with impressive name recognition.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d have a substantial war chest, too.<\/p>\n<p>In August, political activists launched a crowd-funding effort to put pressure on Collins. As one of the Senate\u2019s most moderate Republicans, she was long been seen as a swing vote on his nomination.
