A day after\u00a0US President Barack Obama\u2019s state of the union address<\/a>, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov slammed Washington for embarking on a path of confrontation with Moscow.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing the United States\u2019 actions, a mood of confrontation has prevailed in the North Atlantic alliance. It has made an absolutely politicized decision on suspending cooperation on military and civilian matters. Effectively, all the projects have been frozen,\u201d Lavrov said in an annual press conference in Moscow on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not Russia\u2019s choice and Moscow does not want and would not allow a new Cold War,\u201d the minister stressed.<\/p>\n

Lavrov said Russia and the US \u201ccarry great responsibility\u201d in the \u201cworld arena\u201d and must work together.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Americans have taken a path of\u00a0confrontation, completely and uncritically assessing their own steps, and President Obama\u2019s speech yesterday shows that there is only one in\u00a0the center of [his] philosophy: We are Number One. And everyone else just needs to\u00a0understand that,\u201d Lavrov said during\u00a0the televised press conference.<\/p>\n

He urged Russia\u2019s western partners to understand that the realization of global security is impossible through unilateral actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWestern attempts to isolate Russia have been futile,\u201d said the diplomat adding that Russia \u201cconsistently works on deeper cooperation within\u00a0BRICS<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hear a lot of\u00a0statements from\u00a0our western partners about\u00a0the need to\u00a0isolate Russia. President [of the United States Barack] Obama thought it was appropriate to\u00a0say almost the same during\u00a0his address to\u00a0the nation yesterday. All these attempts will yield no results,\u201d the Russian Foreign Minister said.<\/p>\n

Obama had during his \u201cState of the Union Address 2015\u2033 said\u00a0US support for Ukraine was a show of American strength and that Washington had successfully managed to \u201cisolate Russia\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, today, it is America that stands strong and united with our allies, while Russia is isolated, with its economy in tatters,\u201d Obama said.<\/p>\n

Lavrov in particular called on the US and EU to resume equal dialogue on bilateral and international issues, including the Ukraine crisis. Moscow is extremely concerned over\u00a0the new outbreak of\u00a0violence in\u00a0eastern Ukraine, he added.<\/p>\n

Lavrov also said on Wednesday that those accusing Russia of sending troops and weapons to the conflict-torn south-eastern Ukraine need to substantiate their accusations with proof.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hear a lot about the flow of Russian troops and arms. And every time I respond that if one speaks with such certainty then one should present some facts. However, no one is either capable or willing to present us with the facts,\u201d said Lavrov.<\/p>\n

On Monday, EU foreign ministers agreed that a future settlement in Ukraine would enable possible \u201cpolitical dialogue\u201d and collaboration with Russia in stabilizing the Middle East and fighting terrorism, EU foreign-policy chief Federica Mogherini said.<\/p>\n

Austria\u2019s Sebastian Kurz urged a strategy \u201cfor putting the long-term relationship with Russia back on a stable footing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said the EU must \u201cdistinguish very clearly\u201d between sanctions over Crimea, now firmly in Russia\u2019s control, and the wider economic penalties imposed over Russia\u2019s role in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n
