And it would not be possible to evacuate the 10-mile emergency evacuation zone around the site if a higher level of emergency were declared.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u201cNone of the roads are passable,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Ledford said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe plant is safe. The reactors are in hot stand-by mode 3 shutdown.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/10-30-15Brunswick_Nuclear_Plantcelebrates40thanniversary_mid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-103997\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/10-30-15Brunswick_Nuclear_Plantcelebrates40thanniversary_mid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/10-30-15Brunswick_Nuclear_Plantcelebrates40thanniversary_mid.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/10-30-15Brunswick_Nuclear_Plantcelebrates40thanniversary_mid-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.intellihub.com\/north-carolina-nuclear-power-plant-declares-unusual-event-following-storm-hot-shutdown\/\"><em>But as Intellihub reports<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<strong>The Nuclear Regulatory Commission\u00a0is being tight-lipped about an \u201cunusual event\u201d which occurred at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant<\/strong>\u00a0last Saturday which forced a \u201chot shutdown\u201d of both the plant\u2019s Generation IV-type reactors 1 and 2.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>NRC classified the emergency as an \u201cunusual event\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0but provided little to no details on the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the NRC reports that weather conditions from Tropical Storm Florence are currently preventing workers from accessing the plant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cA hazardous event has resulted in on site conditions sufficient to prohibit the plant staff from accessing the site via personal vehicles due to flooding of local roads by Tropical Storm Florence.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From the NRC regarding Event 53609:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_104000\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-17-at-9.27.03-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104000\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104000\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-17-at-9.27.03-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-17-at-9.27.03-AM.png 500w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-17-at-9.27.03-AM-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-104000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">h\/t\u00a0@tronictime<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The current rector mode is showing as \u201chot shutdown\u201d and more rain is on the way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>River waters in the area are expected to rise as much as 20 feet in the coming days.\u00a0Not to mention, local dams in the area may be to capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Brunswick is equipped with\u00a0<strong>emergency backup diesel generators to operate essential equipment if the facility lost off-site power from the grid<\/strong>.
