This is a travesty of justice. Cancel Brett Kavanaugh, adjourn the hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As soon as Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa began spelling out the ground rules, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., interrupted, insisting the hearing \u201ccannot possibly move forward\u201d\u00a0because 42,000 relevant documents were\u00a0\u201cdumped\u201d\u00a0Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley ruled her \u201cout of order,\u201d but Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who moved to adjourn., was among Democratic colleagues who backed her up.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Cornyn, R-Texas, rebuked the Democrats, asserting they had turned the proceeding into \u201cmob rule\u201d and would be \u201cheld in contempt of court\u201d if they behaved that way in a court of law.<\/p>\n<p>Committee Democrats also complained about the Trump administration withholding some 100,000 pages of documents related to Kavanaugh\u2019s tenure as White House staff secretary under President George W. Bush as \u201ccommittee confidential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans argued Kavanaugh\u2019s job was not to give his opinion to the president but to ensure that the chief executive received \u201cwell-rounded\u201d counsel on any particular issue.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, charged further that Democrats already have made up their minds about Kavanaugh and are using the\u00a0document issue\u00a0to \u201cdistract and delay,\u201d knowing the White House couldn\u2019t comply because any such communications with the president are sensitive by nature and often matters of national security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats complain about documents, but every one has committed to voted against him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz said the Democrats are trying to \u201crelitigate the 2016 election,\u201d contending Americans chose Donald Trump and his list of originalist judges from which he would choose Supreme Court nominees.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley several times pointed out that Kavanaugh\u2019s suitability for the nation\u2019s highest court can be judged by his 307 opinions for the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and the documents submitted, which amount to five times the volume submitted for the five previous nominees combined.<\/p>\n<p>Blumenthal charged that \u201cno administration in the past has engaged in this kind of concealment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mazie Hirano, D-Hawaii, objected to the characterization of White House staff secretaries as \u201ctraffic cops,\u201d emphasizing Kavanaugh has called his service under President Bush the \u201cmost formative time\u201d in his career.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley responded that Kavanaugh will have opportunity to any answer questions about his White House service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow ridiculous it is to say that we don\u2019t have the records it takes to determine that this person is qualified to serve on the Supreme Court,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., cited an NBC News tweet reporting Democrats had planned over the Labor Day weekend a \u201ccoordinated protest strategy\u201d to \u201cdisrupt and protest\u201d the hearing. And, the report said, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., later \u201cled a phone call,\u201d and committee members are \u201cexecuting\u201d the plan now.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., admitted he and other Democrats participated in the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Chairman, there was a phone conference yesterday, and I can tell you, at the time of the phone conference, many issues were raised,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the issues was the fact that over 100,000 documents related to Judge Kavanaugh had been characterized by the chairman of the committee as committee confidential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Feinstein: Kavaugh \u2018anti-choice and pro-gun\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When the top Democrat on the committee, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., finally make her opening statement, she spelled out the issues that animated her party\u2019s base and the dozen or so activists who were removed from the hearing room for heckling.<\/p>\n<p>Kavanaugh, she said, is \u201canti-choice and pro-gun,\u201d and she told him, \u201cYour rulings indicate you are willing to disregard precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact of overturning Roe is much broader than protecting a woman\u2019s right to choose,\u201d said Feinstein, saying it would impact \u201ca bulwark of privacy rights\u201d related to \u201can individual\u2019s right to make choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
