Just hours after clinching the Republican nomination in the Florida governor race, Rep. Ron DeSantis is facing serious backlash for a comment he made on \u201cAmerica\u2019s Newsroom\u201d Wednesday.<\/p>\n

DeSantis warned voters against voting for his opponent Andrew Gillum \u2014 who happens to be black \u2014 by saying, \u201cThe last thing we need to do is monkey this up.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis explained that Gillum, the Bernie-Sanders-backed former mayor of Tallahassee, leaned too far toward socialism for the red state of Florida, which President Donald Trump easily carried in 2016.\u00a0Gillum\u2019s platform<\/a>\u00a0includes a $15 minimum wage and Medicare for all.<\/p>\n

DeSantis appeared to be referencing the economy when he made the now-viral comment: \u201cThe last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s not going to work. That\u2019s not going to be good for Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n

The economy and Gillum\u2019s more socialist views have often been a theme for DeSantis, who told Laura Ingraham Tuesday night, \u201cI\u2019m trying to make Florida even better. He\u2019s trying to make Florida Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n
