FBI Has \u2018Ongoing\u2019 Relationship With Left-Wing SPLC, Which Once Put Ben Carson On An \u2018Extremist Watch List\u2019<\/h1>\n<p>Peter Hasson | Reporter<br \/>\nThe Daily Caller<\/p>\n<div id=\"dailycaller_inline1\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The FBI has an ongoing relationship with the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center, Fox News host Tucker Carlson reported.<\/li>\n<li>The SPLC once placed HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson on an \u201cextremist watch list,\u201d before backing down and removing him four months later.<\/li>\n<li>The SPLC also works with Amazon, Twitter, Google and Facebook in their efforts to police their platforms.<\/li>\n<li>The SPLC\u2019s work has been plagued by inaccuracies and the group paid out a $3.3 million settlement in April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The FBI has an \u201congoing\u201d relationship with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a left-wing nonprofit that once placed Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson on an \u201cextremist watch list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to an exclusive report from Fox News host and Daily Caller co-founder Tucker Carlson, who broke the news on his show \u201cTucker Carlson Tonight\u201d Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell as you already know if you\u2019ve been paying any attention at all, the Southern Poverty Law Center is a fraudulent enterprise,\u201d said Carlson. \u201cIt\u2019s a left-wing political group that uses \u2018hate crime\u2019 designations to target its ideological enemies and to crush people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SPLC has repeatedly been allowed to brief the FBI on alleged domestic terrorist threats to this country,\u201d\u00a0Carlson reported. \u201cDisturbingly though, the relationship is ongoing, if you can believe it.\u201d\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/06\/06\/splc-partner-google-facebook-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/06\/06\/splc-partner-google-facebook-amazon\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187001000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGkyfKmazB5HPyuA1A2gPCmJUBEpw\">(RELATED: the FBI has refused to describe the extent of its collaboration with the SPLC, we\u2019ve asked repeatedly, or even to explain why it continues to work with a group like that,\u201d Carlson said, many years, the FBI has engaged with various organizations, both formally and informally,\u201d\u00a0FBI spokeswoman Jacqueline Maguire said in a statement to Carlson\u2019s show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch outreach is a critical component of the FBI\u2019s mission, and we welcome information from these organizations on any possible violations of civil rights, hate crimes, or other potential crimes or threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"dailycaller_inline3\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Attorney General has directed the FBI to reevaluate their relationships with groups like this to ensure the FBI does not partner with any group that discriminates,\u201d Department of Justice spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores told Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC\u2019s lists of \u201cextremists\u201d and \u201chate groups\u201d have consistently courted controversy and the nonprofit\u2019s work has been plagued by inaccuracies.<\/p>\n<p>Floyd Lee Corkins, who opened fire at the Family Research Center (FRC) in 2012, said he chose the FRC for his act of violence\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/southern-poverty-law-center-website-triggered-frc-shooting\/article\/2520748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/southern-poverty-law-center-website-triggered-frc-shooting\/article\/2520748&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187001000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFpsRHisVck3zxc8KNnmUCv0WSAqA\">because the SPLC listed them as a \u201chate group.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carson was surprised to find out in February 2015 that the SPLC\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/02\/08\/southern-poverty-law-center-places-ben-carson-on-extremist-watch-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/02\/08\/southern-poverty-law-center-places-ben-carson-on-extremist-watch-list\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEVQjBpB-dsVRxJTOwKxtHVGmpJ7g\">placed him on an \u201cextremist watch list\u201d<\/a>\u00a0for his conservative beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC cited as proof of Carson\u2019s \u201cextremism\u201d a quote in which he said: \u201cMarriage is between a man and a woman; it\u2019s a well-established pillar of society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following a backlash, the SPLC apologized and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/02\/11\/southern-poverty-law-center-apologizes-to-ben-carson-for-putting-him-on-its-extremist-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/02\/11\/southern-poverty-law-center-apologizes-to-ben-carson-for-putting-him-on-its-extremist-list\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEGtW5cbcJDy3UtH8Y80-7lu8f3Q\">removed him from its list<\/a>.\u00a0Carson was on the list for four months before the SPLC removed the \u201cextremist\u201d label.<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/03\/16\/splc-russia-articles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/03\/16\/splc-russia-articles\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG7-7l78rJQlahG3IwEVRP_lhL3VQ\">deleted three Russia-related articles<\/a>\u00a0this March after challenges to their accuracy followed by legal threats.<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC\u00a0removed a controversial \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/04\/19\/splc-maajid-nawaz-muslim-extremist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/04\/19\/splc-maajid-nawaz-muslim-extremist\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG5d7ugv98StnYy2VC3aEOrDBP7vQ\">anti-Muslim extremist<\/a>\u201d list in April, after British Muslim reformer Maajid Nawaz announced plans to sue the SPLC for defamation. The left-wing group ending up paying Nawaz a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/06\/18\/splc-pays-out-millions-to-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/06\/18\/splc-pays-out-millions-to-group\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEkCzqo_YdqLyvL1sHYJoeUJz4Bhw\">$3.375-million settlement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Somali-born women\u2019s rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali was also on the list.<\/p>\n<p>Ali, a victim of female genital mutilation who now advocates against the practice, is an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/three-women-muslim-countries-us-human-right-award\/3098387.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/three-women-muslim-countries-us-human-right-award\/3098387.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHbA-1d55WqQaZ0lhbqHSslyTirBw\">award-winning<\/a>\u00a0human rights activist. For the last decade, her nonprofit, the AHA Foundation, has worked to protect women from honor violence, forced marriage and genital mutilation.<\/p>\n<p>But according to the SPLC\u2019s since-deleted list, Ali is an \u201canti-Muslim extremist.\u201d\u00a0The SPLC has yet to apologize or officially retract its \u201cextremist\u201d label for Ali.<\/p>\n<p>Ali\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/24\/opinion\/southern-poverty-law-center-liberals-islam.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/24\/opinion\/southern-poverty-law-center-liberals-islam.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEE2LOtBkzbO8giAHZf64wzB3y8vw\">criticized<\/a>\u00a0Apple CEO Tim Cook in August 2017 for donating to the SPLC, which she described as \u201can organization that has lost its way, smearing people who are fighting for liberty and turning a blind eye to an ideology and political movement that has much in common with Nazism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC\u2019s influence extends beyond its work with federal law enforcement. The SPLC has working partnerships with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/06\/06\/splc-partner-google-facebook-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/06\/06\/splc-partner-google-facebook-amazon\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGAjNNg7FT_XMtEKKzPgHjVfNPF3Q\">Twitter, Facebook, Amazon and Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The four tech companies all work with or consult the SPLC in policing their platforms for \u201chate speech\u201d or \u201chate groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC has faced tough criticisms not just from conservatives, but from establishment publications, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when the line between \u2018hate group\u2019 and mainstream politics is getting thinner and the need for productive civil discourse is growing more serious, fanning liberal fears, while a great opportunity for the SPLC, might be a problem for the nation,\u201d Ben Schreckinger, now with GQ,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2017\/06\/28\/morris-dees-splc-trump-southern-poverty-law-center-215312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2017\/06\/28\/morris-dees-splc-trump-southern-poverty-law-center-215312&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHivc9fzYx0jlM8F7RCaCwu6pm-1w\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in a June 2017 piece for Politico.<\/p>\n<p>Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle, while still writing for Bloomberg,\u00a0similarly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/view\/articles\/2017-09-07\/southern-poverty-law-center-gets-creative-to-label-hate-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/view\/articles\/2017-09-07\/southern-poverty-law-center-gets-creative-to-label-hate-groups&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532868187002000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHlvHnpiH-UsWFKcfIWZHqQaY49rw\">criticize<wbr \/>d<\/a>\u00a0the SPLC\u2019s flimsy definition of \u201chate group\u201d in\u00a0 September 2017.
