Ahead of President Donald Trump’s stump speech for Sen. Luther Strange, R-Ala., Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson praised Strange’s opponent in the race.  Strange will square off with former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore in a primary runoff election Tuesday.

“Judge Moore is a fine man of proven character and integrity, who I have come to respect over the years,” Carson said in a statement posted to Moore’s campaign website. “I was delighted to hear he is running for the U.S. Senate. He is truly someone who reflects the Judeo-Christian values that were so important to the establishment of our country. It is these values that we must return to in order to make America great again.

“I wish him well and hope everyone will make sure they vote on Tuesday.”

Trump was due to give a speech at a rally for Strange in Huntsville, Alabama Friday evening. Vice President Mike Pence has also voiced his support of Strange in the special election that stems from Jeff Sessions’ appointment to serve as attorney general.

Strange was temporarily appointed to occupy the seat in January until a special election could be held, which will take place in December. No candidate earned 50 percent of the vote in the GOP primary last month, which triggered Tuesday’s runoff.
