Shane in his new suit with his son

How does a 24-year old single father from rural Illinois end up sitting next to the next President of the United States at the Inaugural Ball? For Shane Bouvet, it was about being himself and dedicating himself to a passion.

“This is pretty much the biggest thing I’ve done in my life. I don’t get out much. I’m a small-town, blue-collar guy.”

It began during the Republican primaries when Shane was fighting a battle for custody of his 4-year old little boy. He had been planning on being the first in his family to get a four-year college degree when his son was born. So he temporarily put those plans on hold in order to work and support his son.

The turbulence in Shane’s life led him to take notice of another underdog, Donald Trump. Shane liked Trump’s blunt style and felt he could relate to the way many dismissed Trump as a contender

Working nights, Shane began spending his days supporting Trump. He delivered Trump signs, made cold calls for the candidate and posted pro-Trump memes on Facebook.

Shane attended a Trump rally last March, giving his dedication a revitalization. Shane says he arrived at the rally 12 hours early to make sure he got in. He stood all night, without a coat, supporting his candidate. At one point, he waved a Trump flag in front of the opera house as people chanted, “U-S-A!”

When the rally ended, Shane said he pushed through the crowd to try to meet Trump. The encounter was brief, but it was enough that Bouvet recalls it eagerly. He said Trump told him it was amazing he had waited hours, and then autographed a campaign sign for Shane before moving on in the swirl of people.

With renewed determination, Shane began going door to door in his town and others. He said he paid for about 3,000 Trump stickers out of his own pocket to hand out at the Illinois State Fair.

He also upped his work on Facebook. This led to an amazing offer; to become the volunteer coordinator for social media for Trump’s campaign in Illinois.

“He grew our audience,” said Stephanie Holderfield, the director of the Trump’s Illinois campaign. “He’s young and he’s energetic. He had good, positive messaging.”

His dedication never faltered

His extraordinary efforts were rewarded when Trump was elected. Shane says he broke down crying when the result came in.

Lisa Christiansen, an actress, life coach and Trump supporter, said she invited Shane to the Great American Inaugural Ball at the MGM National Harbor after meeting him online and seeing his social media work. His background reminded her of her own challenges growing up.

“I feel like it’s my responsibility to reach to people that might not otherwise have the opportunity,” Christiansen said of the invitation.

Shane says his meager wardrobe did not include anything suitable for attending the ball. Then a friend stepped in to help.

Mike Bell, a former teacher and a politico from Bouvet’s part of Illinois offered assistance, “I’ve known him long enough that when he told me he was going to inaugural ball, he would need a suit,” Bell said of Shane. “We went to Men’s Wearhouse.”

Bell said he was also able to secure a donation of Allen Edmonds dress shoes. The Wisconsin shoemaker has regularly provided shoes to presidents for their inaugurations.

The night before the Inauguration, Shane got a chance to meet Trump again. President Trump praised Shane’s efforts on his behalf. He gave Shane a hug and promised to send him a special thank you.

Two great men getting to meet

Two weeks later, Shane opened the letter from the White House in disbelief. On presidential stationary, a note from Trump read;

“Shane–You are great guy–thanks for all of your help.”

The envelope also contained a check; for $10,000. “I’m still just living in a dream,” Shane said. “I never thought in a million years this would happen.”

Shane was shocked to get this note..and the check

Shane has said he will use the money to help with his father’s chemotherapy treatments. The man is suffering from bladder cancer.

Shane continues to stand behind President Trump, the man he helped elect. He is impressed by the President’s quick moves to implement his campaign agenda.

“He’s getting things done. He’s laying down the law. I’m really blessed with that–that’s what we need. Most politicians are all talk, no action.”

As for Shane, he will continue working hard, supporting his family, spending time with his son. Eventually he hopes to return to school. His story reminds us that hope and hard work can still accomplish so much, whether you are a rich business man or a single dad from a small town.

Shane truly believed in Donald Trump’s message and it in the end, both their dreams came true. Looking back at why Shane got involved in the first place, we hear his unselfish dedication loudly;

“I get tired of seeing people hit rock bottom. If you go to the coffee shops, the old guys talk about the old days when engines roared and things weren’t built in China.”
