Hillary Clinton used a previously undisclosed Gmail account during her tenure as secretary of state, as revealed in summaries of interviews released by the FBI on Friday.

According to one unnamed former aide, the Gmail account was set up in 2010 after he purchased an iPad for Clinton so that she could read “articles of interest” sent to her.

“[NAME REDACTED] stated that she could not view the articles on her Blackberry and the iPad and email account were set up as a way to test a different delivery method,” the FBI’s account of the interview reads. The unnamed aide said he was “fairly sure” the Gmail account wasn’t used after its initial setup, however.

The aide also recounted how, “after he gave the Secretary the iPad, the Secretary fell asleep holding the unopened packaging in her arms.”

“This struck [NAME REDACTED] as funny because, in contrast, he would not be able to sleep if he had just received a new iPad,” the summary reads. “He noted that this episode was foreshadowing for how little she would use the iPad.”

The aide also said that he could not recall configuring the iPad to use any email addresses other than the Gmail account.

The unnamed aide appears to be Philippe Reines, a longtime Clinton staffer known for some epically bruising interactions with the press.

An email released by the State Department shows a June 25, 2010, message to Clinton informing her that the device had been acquired.

“your iPad has arrived!” Reines wrote. The subject line of the email was simply: “hPad.”

“That is exciting news–do you think you can teach me to use it on the flight to Kyev next week?” Clinton responded the following morning.

The FBI asked Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin, two of Clinton’s closest aides, about the Gmail account. Mills said she was “not aware” of the account while at the State Department, while Abedin told the FBI she was not familiar with it.

Mills did, however, know about Clinton’s iPad, which she said was used “review news articles,” according to the FBI. Mills said she didn’t know if Clinton used the Gmail account to send emails.
