CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) — New Syrian refugees are expected to come to Charlottesville over the next few days and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is preparing to welcome them to town.

Almost 5 million Syrians have fled the Middle East since 2011. Now, additional Syrian refugees are moving to Charlottesville and will soon start adapting to their new home.

Ambassadors in Washington D.C. have been working with incoming families to send them to San Diego, California and Charlottesville.

Leaders at the IRC’s Charlottesville branch say this area is an ideal place for refugees to live.

“People are able to find jobs and quickly become self sufficient and support themselves and their families. The schools are good. We have good medical care. All the things that make us want to live here also make it good for refugees,” said Harrier Kuhr, of the IRC.

The IRC provides opportunities for refugees, political asylum seekers, and other immigrants to thrive in the U.S.

Victims of violence and those with medical problems and children are often given preference on where they chose to relocate to in America.
